India and Mexico at a glance

No agreement (MFN duties)
Trade agreement

No trade agreement with India. Since 1 January 2026, Mexico has raised tariffs on about 1,400 tariff lines from countries without a trade agreement with it, India included, to rates of up to 50%. Vehicles, auto parts, motorcycles, steel, textiles, clothing, machinery and ceramics are hit hardest; pharmaceuticals far less.

Trade with India

India's second-largest market in the region: about US$5.7 billion in 2025-26, led by cars (over US$1.1 billion), auto parts, motorcycles, machinery, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. India buys crude oil, gold, machinery and auto parts.

EXPORTING FROM INDIA TO MEXICO

Importing into Mexico: what your buyer needs

How your buyer imports
  • The importer must be in the Padrón de Importadores (SAT), plus sector registers (Padrón Sectorial) for steel, textiles, footwear, chemicals and others.
  • A licensed customs broker (agente aduanal) must file the pedimento.
  • NOM standards and Spanish labelling apply to most consumer goods, often checked before release.
  • Check the 2026 tariff hike: a large share of Indian products now pay 25–50%. Some buyers use IMMEX or PROSEC programmes to reduce duty on inputs.
Duties and taxes

IGI tariff per TIGIE (raised sharply for non-agreement countries from 2026), plus 16% IVA, the DTA customs processing fee and IEPS excise on some goods.

Regulators to know
  • COFEPRIS: medicines, medical devices, cosmetics, food
  • SENASICA: plant and animal health
  • Secretaría de Economía: NOM standards, import permits
  • SEMARNAT: chemicals, waste, wildlife
Documents checklist
  • Commercial invoice (with buyer's RFC, full descriptions)
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading / AWB
  • NOM certificates / labels where applicable
  • Sanitary / phytosanitary certificates
  • ISPM-15 wood packaging

THE OTHER DIRECTION

From Mexico to India, and tips from the field

Importing from Mexico into India

Crude oil and auto parts flow back to India.

  • File the Bill of Entry through a licensed customs broker in India (YAM holds licence R-7/92).
  • Check the HS code in the Indian tariff, the DGFT import policy (free, restricted or prohibited) and any BIS, FSSAI, plant quarantine or other permit before the goods ship.
  • If an agreement applies, get the correct certificate of origin from the exporter to claim the lower duty.

Practical tips
  • Recalculate landed cost after the 2026 tariff increase before quoting Mexican buyers.
  • Many shipments clear inland at Guadalajara, Monterrey or Mexico City under in-bond transit.
  • Our partner agents in Latin America can handle destination clearance and delivery. Ask us for a door-to-door quote.

Written by YAM Logistics from our own experience and public sources, checked November 2026. Duties, taxes, permits and trade agreements change often: treat rates and transit times as indicative and confirm them for your HS code and shipment before you quote or ship. This is general guidance, not legal or tax advice.
