Cargo insurance questions
Isn't the shipping line or airline responsible for damage?+
Only up to limits set by international conventions, which are usually a small amount per package or per kilo, and often far below the value of the goods. Cargo insurance covers the real value.
Who should buy the insurance, buyer or seller?+
It depends on the Incoterm. Under CIF and CIP the seller arranges cover for the buyer. Under FOB, CFR, FCA and EXW the buyer usually does. We can arrange cover for either side.
How much should I insure for?+
The usual practice is the CIF value plus 10%, to cover freight, duty and the expected margin. Your insurer will confirm what suits your cargo.
What is general average?+
When a ship's master sacrifices some cargo or spends money to save the vessel, all cargo owners share the cost. Without insurance you may have to pay a deposit before your cargo is released. Insured cargo is covered by the insurer's guarantee.
What should I do if my cargo arrives damaged?+
Note the damage on the delivery receipt, take photos, keep the packing and tell us straight away. We'll help arrange a survey and send the notices the insurer needs.
Do you issue the policy yourselves?+
No. Policies are issued by IRDAI-licensed insurance companies. We help you choose the cover, arrange it with the insurer and support you through any claim.
